Space based observation on changes in Air Quality during COVID-19 Lockdown period

INSAT-3D observation show that aerosol levels have dropped on an average of 28-40% across the country during the COVID-19 lockdown period (25March-05April, 2020) from the pre-lockdown period (15-24 March, 2020). This reduction in Aerosol Optical depth which include both PM2.5 and PM10 is observed at many places across India, in particular over Indo Gangetic Plain (IGP). This is leading to significant improvement in visibility and more blue skies. The satellite observations showing reduction in air pollution are also supported by the ground observation monitoring stations.
